And the drag works normally for pulling line out just when I go to reel in under tension it catches sometimes and reels in but 80% of the time spins freely. My grandfather said they were taken apart once and put back together by bass pro shops and worked better than when he bought them. Reels schematics are readily available for those reels, so if you've had it apart, that might be the second thing to check, after making sure it's not the drag not being adjusted tight enough. He mostly repairs Shimano reels, but I'm sure he could help you with an older ABU. He's in the Shrevesport, LA area so you would have to send the reel to him.

If that's not put back together properly, it may cause the spool not to engage so it turns. It will go back together, but the drag won't work properly so may not allow the spool to engage for retrieving lineĪnother possible problem would be the mechanism that disengages/ re-engages the spool for casting & retrieving. Otherwise, if all the correct parts are in the reel, is it possible that someone may have taken it apart & not put it back together with all parts in the correct position? The drags in those reels are multiple parts and it is possible to get them in the wrong sequence. Did you try to adjust the drag? If the drag is not tightened down some, (the star wheel next to the handle) they won't retrieve line.
I own several in the various sizes, from 4600 to 10000 sizes, but don't have a 6000. Those round ABU reels in the various sizes are basically the same design, just made with differing dimensions. Does anyone know what could be causing this or know of a solution? I don't want to get rid of the reels because they were my grandfathers for generations but I cant seem to figure out why they are doing this. I went out fishing today with them and when I hooked up the fish was able to just keep pulling line and I wasn't able to reel in the line so I had to do it by hand. I held the line with my thumb on the rod and spun the handles to try and reel in some line it just spins and never brings in line. The only problem with the 3 is that they reel and cast just fine but as soon as I put tension on the line simulating me getting caught up on some tree's etc the handles spin freely and will keep spinning around and wont bring line in. A couple of the reels are goners because its been crushed and run over and stepped on by people but 3 of them are keepers. I recently have got some of my grandfathers old Abu Garcia reels and i want to honor him by using them. Hello I wanted to ask for some help if that is allowed here.
